Sheldon Louis is a Syilx/Okanagan artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, murals, media art, carving, traditional Syilx materials, and traditional hand poke tattooing. Drawing upon his Indigenous culture while embracing contemporary forms of expression, he creates vibrant works that foster dialogue, celebrate identity, and strengthen connections between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. His distinctive visual style combines traditional knowledge with modern influences, placing Indigenous stories within urban and public spaces where they invite reflection, learning, and cultural awareness.
Throughout his career, Sheldon has viewed art as a powerful tool for education, healing, and inclusion. His work explores themes of community, belonging, and cultural resilience, using both traditional and digital media to share stories that are accessible across generations. His projects range from public art installations that transform shared spaces to digital works that engage audiences through contemporary visual storytelling. His contributions as an artist with Disney have further expanded the reach of his work while maintaining strong connections to his cultural roots.
Having begun his own artistic journey as a youth muralist on Vernon’s award-winning community mural project, he now mentors the next generation, encouraging artistic expression as a pathway to confidence, cultural pride, and community leadership. Through his art, Sheldon continues to demonstrate the enduring power of storytelling to connect people and communities.
Sheldon was selected by the independent jury as the 2026 Crabtree McLennan Emerging Artist.
The Crabtree McLennan Emerging Artist designation was established in 2016. Named in honour of Brenda Crabtree, Director, Aboriginal Programs, Emily Carr University and the late Bill McLennan (1948-2020), Curator Emeritus, UBC Museum of Anthropology, this recognition aims to highlight and support emerging talent.
