Shaping Legacy in Porcelain: Russell Hackney’s Mastery of Form, Craft, and Mentorship

Russell Hackney is a third-generation ceramic artist whose porcelain work reflects more than four decades of dedication to craft and design. Trained in Stoke-on-Trent, England—the historic centre of fine ceramics—he apprenticed under his father before earning a degree in 3D Design. Since relocating to British Columbia in 2002, Russell has become an integral part of the province’s clay and design communities, contributing through both his artistry and his mentorship.

Working from his Bowen Island studio, Russell creates embossed porcelain forms inspired by the natural world and cultural narratives, blending technical precision with quiet, contemplative beauty. Recognized as the 2025 Applied Art + Design Award of Distinction recipient, Russell’s work carries forward a legacy of excellence while shaping the future of applied art in BC.
